Doctor Honoris Causa

Mr. Koen Lenaerts, Professor of European Law at the Catholic University of Leuven and President of the Court of Justice of the European Union, will be awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa Award of "Nicolae Titulescu" University of Bucharest.

Nicolae Titulescu University of Bucharest will award the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Professor Koen Lenaerts, Professor of the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium's most prestigious higher education institution) and President of the Court of Justice of the Union European. The ceremony will take place at the headquarters of the "Nicolae Titulescu" University (Calea Văcăreşti, 185, sector 4, Bucharest), in the Amphitheater 1, starting with 17.00.
Mr. Koen Lenaerts obtained his Bachelor's degree in law from 1977 at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Catholic University of Leuven). He becomes a Master of Laws (1978) and a Master in Public Administration (1979) at Harvard University. The Doctorate of Legal Sciences at the Catholic University of Leuven (1982) had into consideration a comparative study of the constitutional jurisprudence of the European Court of Justice and the Supreme Court of the United States of America.
Mr. Koen Lenaerts was an assistant (1979 to 1983), and was later appointed Professor of European Law at the University of Leuven. His teaching activity is also linked to Harvard University (visiting professor, 1988-1989), College of Europe, Bruges (Professor, 1984-1989) and European University Institute, Florence (Professor at the European Law Academy in 1990 and 2000) . He was also a lawyer at the Brussels Bar (1986-1989) and Director of the Institute of European Law, Catholic University of Leuven (1990-2009).
Mr Koen Lenaerts served as Judge at the Court of First Instance of the European Communities (1989-2003) and from 7 October 2003 was appointed Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union. In the period 2012-2015 he was vice-president of this court. On 8 October 2015, he was elected President of the Court of Justice of the European Union, a position he is currently exercising.
